The purpose of this research was to compare the academic achievement of the courses offered in the category of General Education of the first year undergraduate students in the full-time program of Burapha University. The sample of the study consisted of the first year undergraduate students in the full-time program entering Burapha University in the academic year 2006 and having enrolled the courses offered in the category of General Education in the first and second semesters of the academic year 2006. The number of the student as classified by the courses enrolled was between 64-2,679. The data were collected from the database of the Office of Student Records and Registration. The variables used in the study were type of admission, Faculty, student code number, academic year, semester, course number and course grade point in the category of General Education. Mean, standard deviation, distribution coefficient, t-test, and One-Way Analysis of Variance were statistical devices employed for the data analysis through SPSS program.
The findings revealed as follows.
1.The academic achievement of the courses offered in the category of General Education of the first year undergraduate students in the full-time program entering Burapha University in the academic year 2006, as classified by type of admission, indicated as the following.
1.1 The course grade point average in the category of General Education of the students entering Burapha University by means of Direct Admission System was between 2.30-3.51. The highest course grade point average was found in Exercise for Health, followed by English III and English IV. The lowest course grade point average was found in Information Communication and Technology.
1.2 The course grade point average in the category of General Education of the students entering Burapha University by means of Central Admission System was between 2.35-3.94. The highest course grade point average was found in English IV, followed by Exercise for Health and Holistic Health Promotion. The lowest course grade point average was found in Information Communication and Technology.
2. The academic achievement of the courses offered in the category of General Education of the first year students in the full-time program entering Burapha University in the academic year 2006, as classified by Faculty, indicated as the followings.
2.1 The course grade point average in category of General Education of the students studying in the Faculty of Nursing was between 2.58-3.89 The highest course grade point average was found in Holistic Health Promotion, and lowest was in English II.
2.2 The course grade point average in the category of General Education of the students studying in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was between 2.28-3.60 The highest course grade point average was found in English IV, and lowest was in Environmental and Natural Resources Management.
2.3 The course grade point average in the category of General Education of the students studying in the Faculty of Sciences was between 2.07-3.63. The highest course grade point average was found in Exercise for Health, and lowest was in English I.
2.4 The course grade point average in the category of General Education of the students studying in the Faculty of Education was between 1.84-3.26. The highest course grade point average was found in Mathematics in Everyday Life and English for Humanities and Social Sciences, and lowest was in English I.
2.5 The course grade point average in the category of General Education of the students studying in the Faculty of Engineering was between 2.33-3.21 The highest course grade point average was found in English III, and lowest was in English I.
2.6 The course grade point average in the category of General Education of the students studying in the Faculty of Fine Arts was between 1.47-3.00. The highest course grade point average was found in Environmental and Natural Resources Management, and lowest was in English I.
2.7 The course grade point average in the category of General Education of the students studying in the Faculty of Public Health was between 2.50-3.80. The highest course grade point average was found in Exercise for Health, and lowest was in English III.
2.8 The course grade point average in the category of General Education of the students studying in the College of Transportation and Logistics was between 2.36-3.87. The highest course grade point average was found in Exercise for Health, and lowest was in Mathematics in Everyday Life.
2.9 The course grade point average in the category of General Education of the students studying in the College of Sport Science was between 1.07-3.29. The highest course grade point average was found in Exercise for Health, and lowest was in English I.
2.10 The course grade point average in the category of General Education of the students studying in the College of Abhaibhubejhr Thai Tradition Medicine was between 2.46-3.95. The highest course grade point average was found in Exercise for Health, and lowest was in Information Communication and Technology.
3. The results of comparison of academic achievement of courses offered in the category General Education of the first year undergraduate students entering Burapha University in the academic year 2006, as classified by type of admissions, whether direct admission or central admission were found significantly different (p<.05). The course grade point average of the students entering through Central Admissions System was higher than those entering through Direct Admissions System. Finally, it was also found out that three were significant differences in the academic achievement of student, as classified by Faculty, in all coursed enrolled (p<.05). |
